Introduction

Welcome to Green Republic’s blog!

Officially launched on 25th August, 2008 and based in Brunei Darussalam.

The main aims of this blog are to heighten the public’s awareness on the environment, how WE are DAMAGING it and how WE can actually PREVENT the further DEGRADATION of the environment.

In Brunei, our natural heritage is a source of pride. About 75% of our country is covered by Primary tropical jungles and this is what makes eco-tourism successful in Brunei.

As residents of Brunei, we have a duty to protect our natural environment. Yet, we are ignorantly damaging our environment constantly by not practising the 3-Rs which are
REDUCE, REUSE, AND RECYCLE.

The main culprit would most obviously be in the use of plastic bags and polystyrene containers. We excessively use new plastic bags from shops and purchase food in polystyrene containers.

Here’s what WE can do:
Plastic bags:
Reuse the plastic bags that we already have and reduce the usage of anymore plastic bags. It is highly advised to use your own reusable bags such as canvas bags. Canvas bags can be obtained from stores like Supa Save and Utama Grand.

Polystyrene Containers:

These are containers that are also made up of plastics and can remain on the Earth for hundreds of years and choke up landfills. If these are burnt, the gases are harmful to the environment. It is advised to instead bring your own reusable plastic containers.

A good example of how excessively we use all these plastic products is in Sungai Akar landfill. The Sungai Akar landfill at the moment is operating at full capacity, and receives most of the 300 tonnes of waste per day produced in Brunei-Muara district.

For those who want to take part in our campaign, you can start by clicking the pictures above, printing them (on rough paper if you will!), copy them and put them up in your school, in town, etc because this will help raise awareness among people. To end this post, I will say that collectively, we can make a difference, so do your part for the community and spread the word to practise the 3-Rs!
